Identify this shrub if possible?

GraysGrays Posts: 172

Hi there,

Ive been trying to identify what kind of shrub/tree this is? Been living here for 18 months.

Thought it may be a type of cherry? but not sure.

I realise its harder to identify without leaves/flowers, but it has a dark pink flower all over in summer.

I was after some pruning advice really, the branches on it were virtually touching the grass last year, so would it be a good time to prune now? Always a bit worried if I prune something the wrong time it will damage it.

Thanks in advance.image

Almost impossible to say from that photo. Will need to see some leaves when they appear.

Its difficult without leaves on, have you got any close up of the bark / stems? I guess at the moment a Weigela

    Thanks,

Ill try and get some close ups tomorrow.

Reason I asked about identification now before any leaves and flowers, was to see if it would be ok to prune if before.

Is it too late to prune once the tree has leaves and flowers?

    Cheers.

Depends what shrub it is, most shrubs which flower in spring are pruned after flowering for example.

    Kolkwitzia amabilis?

  • Hostafan, snap, that's what I thought immediately I saw it. If it is, it'll make a wonderful show in about two months' time, a mass of pale pink flowers, each orange spotted in the throat.  After that you prune it, removing some of the oldest flowered stems to ensure a succession of new growth. I did chop one to the floor once, from about 10ft tall and it was flowering the second year after, much improved and controlled.
