Ivy single strand

Hi greenthumbs,

Hope you can help... 

I have a single strand of ivy growing down the side of my bookshelf, which so far has been very healthy and aesthetic. But it went and got too long!

Just wondering if it will be ok to cut it shorter without killing it. And if I do cut it, what's likely to happen please?
