Here's a pic of my Gardenia taken this morning, with its glorious 7 delicious scented flowers. By the way, the flowers hate the rain, so I moved the container under shelter (still outside). I hope this will encourage you to persevere with your own plant(s).
Waiting for three new plants now in addition to the one
outside in the pics above.
These plants are so fussy, or so I understand...... Full sun
but shaded from the mid day heat and protected from the rain but in moist
soil. This is not easy to achieve. Or am I getting it all wrong.
What compost / soil / grit mix are you using? Are you using ericaceous compost? Have you
added leaf mould or compost taken from the bottom of the compost heap?
In a few days I’ll have three more plants to pot on or put
out into the ground outside.
Thinking about potting one and keeping it indoors perhaps in
a sun room / conservatory in a position where it’s protected at the hottest
part of the day, one in a pot outside and one in the ground somewhere.
How big is that pot? Doesn't look particularly large?
Papi, that is indeed encouraging! Mine are in pots, with water reservoirs, in ericaceous compost, at the moment. They don't look too bad, though it's early days!
How much sun do yours get? I'm debating full sun vs part sun...
I don't remember what kind of soil I put it in. Probably my usual mix of compost. The pot is about 30cm in diameter and I expect it's sufficient for the time being. I think it likes a little sun but not scorching, and water (but not rain which damages the flower). Having it in a container makes it easier to move it to the best aspect conditions it likes.
Mine now has three flowers! Doesn't seem to be having any negative reaction at all the having been through the postal system. Settling in happily in a half- sunny position, and looking healthy!
My new
plants have survived being delivered. They looked a lot healthier than
the first one i bought a year and a bit or so ago. One is in full sun on
a south facing upstairs bedroom window sill, one is in full sun on a south
facing upstairs bathroom (frosted) window sill and the third is in the ground
outside in an open south facing position.
All three
are OK and doing well but i have to say that the one that is in full sun behind
glass on the bedroom window sill without net curtains etc is storming away and
with four open flowers and new growth whilst the other two are much slower.
Me's
thinking that here in the UK perhaps these plants are best indoors in full
sun. Must remember to move these away into an unheated room in winter
away from radiators and draughts etc.
I potted
them on with an even mix of grit, ericaceous compost and well rotted home made
compost and I’m watering with rainwater as far as I can whilst it lasts then I’ll
switch to tap water that has stood for 24hrs or so first.
3rd
September and after the hottest summer since 1976 my two Gardenias that are
indoors in a south facing window without shade or protection have done really well
indeed. A thermometer on the same windowsill regularly recorded 34
degrees and on the hottest day 39 degrees Celsius. Location East Yorkshire Coast for those wondering far far north.
The one
that's outside in the ground in full sun has grown very little by comparison
and struggling. Looking forward to seeing them flower again next year.
