Laurel Hedge Problem

Hello - would anyone be able to tell me what is going on with my Laurel hedge? Some leaves appear to be being eaten although I've never seen any insect on them other than ants during the Summer.

Generally, it seems to the leaves on top that are worst affected.

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

  • I think that's probably snail or slug damage from when the leaves are just unfurling and nice and soft. As they expand, so the damage becomes more evident. It'll vanish when you cut the shrub in April/May and the new growth will be marvellous. Evergreens are the only source of leafy food in the winter, so they tend to be the focus of attack

Looks like it may be Laurel shot hole disease.

  • Yes, possibly. That's fungal, a spring and summer thing, so a good start this year, keeping it well fed and watered (but water at the roots, rather than overhead), should keep it at bay. As I said earlier, a late spring tidy up will improve the look and remove the affected growth.
