Trouble with Areca Indoor Palm.. (Chrysalidocarpus Lutescens)

I am the new owner of a Areca Palm Plant and we are having trouble with it settling in. It sits by a very tall South Westerly facing window with a radiator underneath it (see photos). Our heating comes on a few hours in the morning and 3-4 hours at night.

I have tried reading all the online advice but it just doesn't seem to be looking happy since we purchased it 3 weeks ago. Having said this, I have caught my partner watering it when i'm at work and found it sitting in standing water at times!

We usually water it every few days but not overly so and the ends of the leaves are still looking brown/sorry for themselves.

We've pulled out any dead roots too. Alarmingly, i've also found some little bugs in the soil/roots and those pesky small flies...i'm concerned it's diseased!?

I've also got some Baby Bio drip feeders on order.

What can I do to help this plant recover and make sure I look after it properly please?

The grubs and flies are most likely fungus gnats. They are generally harmless - the grubs just feed on decaying plant material and fungal growth.

If there are dead roots, then it could be a sign that the plant has been over-watered at some point (not necessarily by you or your partner, but possibly before that, when it was IKEA).

The fungus gnats then move in to feed on the dead matter, etc.
