Stop it @Mark56 , l am a mushy mess as it is ! They have quite a few hoglets in at the moment,  and some born there the other day. They work so hard to look after the hogs.

They really are the unsung heroes of the wildlife world. Up throughout the night feeding and taking emergencies. Is your local rescue full like mine?

It was interesting to read about the feeding of mealworms etc giving hedgehog dental problems.
I've recently heard that they have found that badgers are also suffering because of being fed to much of this type of food and again advise meat flavored dog biscuit as a better alternative.
So I can now be seen going off into the woods with my bag of dog biscuit and binoculars people must think there is that strange man again  :D one thing I have found is that foxes love them to and will actually come in and feed with the badgers.
"A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in."
  • Our tiniest hog came to visit last night - it never eats from the bowl, and always comes on it's own. Last night it caused some interest from the randy, bully male who circled the tiny one at least a dozen times before realizing that the tiny one had nothing to offer it. The adult must have been 3 or 4 times bigger than the babe.  I hope babe survives.

@Mark56, yes, they closed earlier this week to new admissions. The hot weather didn't help, as although the hospital bit has air conditioning,  the other parts don't. I think all the local rescues are almost full.

Do they seem to come mostly from car deaths of parents?

It’s usually nests that get disturbed whether intentional or unintentional, the rescues get calls from many questionable individuals! ‘My dog attacked a hog and I’m worried about my dog now it has spikes impaled in its gums, come and collect or I will dump the babies in the woods (no parent and no food source) etc. Just one call that springs to mind :(

I’m not surprised, the cold winter, late Spring and then scorching Summer has sent them all over the place - the hoglets, the dehydrated adults roaming in the day, rock hard ground stopping foraging trips for worms and insects

I am wondering if 1 garden is enough to offer as a home for a rescued hog?........
