Some information from my local rescue, for those of you using pumpkins for Halloween..
With Pumpkins everywhere at the moment please do not leave them out for the hedgehogs. As detailed in the poster they cannot digest fruit and vegetables so they are getting nothing from them, the need is to be support feeding on cat food, fresh water or a meat based hedgehog food.
For hedgehogs, eating pumpkins will act as a laxative and will cause diarrhoea which then causes dehydration, at this time of the year they need to be gaining weight and storing fat, so eating pumpkins will cause the opposite.
Lots of people will report seeing hedgehogs eating apples on the ground etc, what they are actually eating are the grubs inside the apples.
I mentioned the fox and the hog co-existing and thought you'd like to see this pic from last night. It was a bit drizzly so not a great pic but they are seemingly tucking into dinner together without issue
Not as much as last week ... but it has been much colder ... so cold I had to get a new car battery 🥶 Most winters they start getting a big erratic in their visits about now ... leaf fall seems to trigger the change ... we make sure that there’s always food and water out for them 🦔
