So cute AnniD, how old do you think he is. I so what to go and look under the wood and see how they are but wont. I see them out and about every night and the food and water has gone by the morning. Not sure if I added this link yesterday but just incase here it is again.

Sorry I can't make it so you can click it but if you copy and past it works.

  • Fascinating to watch, thanks for the link @NannaBoo, I have never seen a hog birth before, also love the little cutie @AnniD, I would be no good in a rescue centre - I remember my daughter starting work in a Vets, coming home obviously affected by the day's proceedings, putting animals to sleep can't be easy when their owners are so upset too. However there were many happy outcomes, and she soon got used to the highs and lows.

Your welcome Guernsey Donkey2, the family in our garden seem to be doing fine even after us accidentally disturbing them, mum is still with them. So wish I had a night camera then I could share with you all. Right back to the digging out of tree and Ivy roots.

@NannaBoo You asked about the kitten food, it should be ok as long as there is no lactose. Just finished tending to 28 hoggies, 12 of which are hoglets all doing well 🦔🥰 someone will be going in later to top up the food bowls 😊

Thanks for the info timmy77. I was in the garden this morning and could hear with sort of scratching noise which to be honest scared me. As I moved closer to where Mrs hog and her babies are I realised it was then moving about so all is well over there. Just been over there and put down food and water for them. Re the kitten food I realized no lactose as they can't have milk, it's funny as I can have anything with lactose in it. I've just made a short tunnel to attach to the hog house, I was thinking it would make it darker and keep any wind out also that might be why she hasn't used it.

Just a reminder to all the gardeners who use strimmers, to watch out for hedgehogs hiding in long grass etc. This little one brought in to local rescue with an injury to her spines, thought to have been caused by a strimmer.

Morning AnniD, poor little thing will her/she recover and will the spines grow back. The one's in our garden are growing at a rate now so much so I wonder how they all fit in their nest. I saw one out last night and it froze as I went past so I rushed in for my camera but it was gone when I got back. Note to self 11am they are in front garden most nights take camera sit in car with window down and hope. I suspect mum and the other one were in the shrubbery, all the food continues to go.

We had three hogs eating at the restaurant last night - a little pushing, shoving and grunting as they all tried to get their snouts into the bowl at the same time.  One stands in the bowl as if to say this food is just for me, but the other two weren't having it and eventually pushed the dominant one out of the bowl.
I was heartened this morning when my neighbour said they had seen at least 5 in the field last night and a couple were youngsters.  That is after the tractor had bailed the hay, so pleased they weren't caught up in the machinery which has happened in the past with tragic results for the poor hogs.
@NannaBoo it is so sad to see a careless act which could so easily be avoided if people would only slow down, think, and take the time to be more vigilant before they begin strimming.  I do hope it has a full recovery @AnniD

Oh @AnniD, that poor girl! :( We have so many come in with similar injuries.  One boy came in with awful injuries last year, he survived but is now completely blind. Despite his disability, he is having a wonderful life in a massive enclosed back garden (he wouldn’t last on the wild). Every effort is made of course is to rerelease all hoggies back where they came from if it’s a suitable area. If not, then a carefully selected location is chosen away from main roads and predators.
here’s three babies having a pile-on whilst I cleaned out their cage yesterday

The rescue is pretty optimistic @Nanna Boo, and the spines usually do grow back. I know not everyone is as hedgehog obsessed as l am 😊 , but l wish they would check for things anyway, tins, bottles, stones anything before they start. Health and safety and all that, for them if not the hedgehogs!
