First Greenhouse and base

Morning everyone...in June I'm going to buy my first Greenhouse, I was looking to get a 6ft x 8ft, but after reading posts on here saying you should always get one bigger than you think you need I have decided to go for a 6ft x 10ft same as in the below link.

So, do any of you have a Hercules Trafalgar and if so can you recommend it?

Also, here is a picture of my base design and the type of paving slab I will be using, and I was wondering if my chosen slab will be sturdy enough to support the weight?

Thanks in advance

And, thanks for the info re the base, I'll make sure the foundation is as firm as possible.

    Hi Sheps,

What you've drawn is similar to the set up I have ....  the gravel area is great for watering pots on and letting them drain.

A couple of things you might want to consider ...

Try and work out where any anchors for the base are going to end up. These  might need you to drill through the flags ... and you don't want to have to do this near the edge as it will be more likely to crack.

Also, give some thought to how you will deal with the overflow from your waterbutts .... easier to build in some drainage now than later.

Thanks very much for the advice, Bee image

I have re-thought the base layout after what you said about the overflow.

I will use a 2 into 1 gutter system like below to feed the connected water butts, and run an overflow pipe the length of the garden into a soak away.

Re the greenhouse anchor points, all anchors will be at least 8 inches from the edge of the paving slabs, so hopefully they won't cause any cracks.

    Here are the dimensions

    Slab Base 2400mm x 3600mm

    GH Base   1955mm x 3234mm

  • Hello sheps I have my greenhouse,s on flagsand then the greenhouse sits on a course of brick mine is a single course but you could have as many as you wish , this lifts greenhouse of floor helps with rainwater leaking in and gives you more height inside greenhouse .

    Thanks Jason image

Regarding the base, with the greenhouse being so heavy, would I need to use hardcore as part of the foundation ?

    Hi Sheps,

We dug out and put down 6 inches of hardcore and used a whacker to consolidate. It was worthwhile putting this effort in as the flags went down easily and the base was level for the greenhouse.

This made putting up the greenhouse - which we also did ourselves - so much easier.

    Hope that makes sense!

Thanks Bee, think I will use hardcore as part of the foundation.

  • Hello as mentioned above hardcore would give a better base and help with drainage , dont forget to put a slight slope to  help with drainage to if I was you I would have my slope same way as I would be having water butts to help with flow from greenhouse gutters just a thought as this is what I did and it helps .
