New Zealand Flax or Phormium

  • I agree, a Cordyline would look daft in that position, and I would like something a bit different - a centre piece if you like.

I will continue to look, but I am not sure if I will find one for sale over here, however thanks for recommending it to me Verdun and your kind offer.  I appreciate your help trying to track one down.

  • I will try the last of the garden shops before deciding Verdun, so thanks for your Dazzler offer which I may well take up. Watch this space as they say .....

  • I have just spoken on phone to another good GC who have Jester, Pink Stripe, Tricolour & Evening Glow, of which Evening Glow is the closest to Dazzler, but still more pink than red. I have one more GC to try hopefully by the w/end. Although many of these are almost half price at u.k. nurseries, once I have paid the delivery charges, the cost is just about the same as buying here..

Hi GD, here's a pic of my Phormium x tenax ‘Jester’, planted 2 years ago in a large planter.image

  • Thanks for posting the picture of Jester Papi Jo, it is a very attractive plant with it's arching swords, and looks to be ideally suited to your pot and area, but it isn't for me in the position I have.  You see we have a green trellis behind where the well feature stands, and I really do think red or deep pink would make a more vibrant statement.

Yes, you are right of course Verdun, it is a Cordyline, and I have grown them before.  They soon outgrow their situation if it isn't a large enough area.  We have the common green varieties, but this red Torbay specimen is quite striking.  But I have set my heart on the Dazzler now, it's your fault for introducing it to me.
