Growing Exibition LONG Carrotts

Can anyone tell me When we should start to sew Carrotts in tall bins to get Long Carrotts ? We have the info as to how to grow them but dont know how early we should start them off !!
We have been challenged by our grandson to grow the longest Carrott so would be grateful for any info on a start date, thanks.
