Any ideas what this plant is?

Do you have any idea what this plant may be. It is in about a 6 inch pot if that helps with dimensions. Although it is throwing out stems it hasn't had any flowers. It appeared last Autumn growing in another plant's pot, so I moved it to it's own but not sure if I'm just encouraging a weed.

p.s. I know it must get annoying to have loads of threads just titled "what's this?" but I'm not imaginative enough to think of a better one.

Looks like one of the Geums to me.

if it just appeared in a pot that should contain another, the most likely Geum is Geum urbanum

  • I agree with nut, almost certainly wood avens.  That weed is the only geum I know of which retains leaves over winter.  You could keep it and wait and see, but if it produces small yellow flowers, get rid of it quick before it seeds or you'll have them forever!

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Thanks Both (and Bob), I'd never heard of Geums but googling pictures the one that looks most like it is Geum Rivale. As last year was the first one I've ever tried growing anything I bought some of those seed mix packets, like Bee & Butterfly Mix. I think it probably came from them. I think it's a bit of an error to buy those mixes. I bought a Chili Pepper Mix and had no idea what any of them were, I think they were Scotch Bonnets. So this year I'm only buying things with the name of the plant on the front.

Yes, I gave up mixes. One of the problems is disturbing the slower (and probably nicer) seeds when pricking out the quick germinators
