Periwinkle

I have had blue/mauve periwinkles in the past and have treated them almost like weeds as they have spread so rapidly.  However I have none now.

Has anyone grown either red or white Periwinkle - are the plants easy to get hold of - to grow etc?

I tried white once (Vinca minor alba) and it just quietly disappeared. Think I got the plants from a local nursery.

Blue/mauve (Vinca major) does nicely here with no problems.

I have grown the dark red one and it did ok. Not as rampant as the purple one.

I have a white one and have been surprised at how little it has grown after a few years.

  • I have also grown a white one before. It died after a few months image

  • I lost a white one too. Thought it was me - now not so sure! Blue does fine here, been flowering all winter.

The blue one grows like a weed here, in fact it's a bit of a nuisance.  Never tried the white one and didn't know there was a red one.

  • From all your comments, it would seem that the true blue periwinkle is the stronger of the plants.  Yes, they are quite rampant, but seem to be good value with long lasting flowers.  I thought they would be good to grow as a cover up over the pond liner, with the stems drooping over the edges of the pond - do they like damp soil?

I think they like well drained and poorly drained soils. Give it a go! Mine is tucked away in a corner under a hawthorn hedge. Now we've talked about it I might divide it and put it in other parts of the garden. It's a good doer and hasn't been invasive here. Might be because its neighbour is a fairly muscular Geranium macrorrhizum and they keep each other in order.

  • We had it for years, it was growing in a few places, but we seem to have lost all the plants now as we have re-designed parts of the garden., so I will start afresh and perhaps divide a new plant into two (£7.99 at our GC).
