Hardwood cuttings from roses

I've got a rambler Goldfinch which I planted in 2016, which incidentally has never flowered.

However it's put on lots of growth, and I really need to prune a few of the stems as they're not going in the direction I want!

I just wondered if anyone knows if I can take cuttings from the stems I prune, and if so how??

Seem to have read a bit of conflicting information about this.

Many thanks in advance!!

If I was cutting the stems I'd do some cuttings, (if I wanted more bushes), whether or not it was the right time. The wrong time often works.

I don't know roses but if this one hasn't flowered, make sure you're not cutting off the bits that are going to flower. Some flower on the wood that grew last year, some can be cut right back and still flower. I have no idea which one does what, sorry.

In addition to what was said already, sometimes ramblers want to reach a certain size and maturity before they are willing to flower. So if you trim too early, you might dissuade it from doing its stuff again this year. Ramblers are quite pliable, so maybe try to re-arrange things, instead of cutting it off.

  • Thanks for all the replies.

I ended up pruning it (a bit) anyway.  Couldn't manage to get those stems to go where I wanted.

Also took a few cuttings, nothing ventured and all that!!

I've always taken hardwood rose cuttings in the autumn, never this time of year but you've got them so why not try?  Don't let the soil dry out.  Good luck

  • Hi, I am contemplating taking some cuttings of some climbing and shrub roses now and wondered how you got on @Sandra100?  Did amy of your cuttings root up?
