what has happened to my beautiful cherry tree and what can I do about it?

    the wood is dead or dying. Fungi like that don't grow on healthy wood. The fungi are a result rather than a cause.

    Hard to tell from the photo. If it's just one branch and the rest of the tree is OK, just chop off the dead one. But make sure you take it back into live wood and don't leave any stumps of branches, that's where rot sets in

  • looks like many zoned bracket fungus, will slowly move to the rest of tree as it dies (infects dead wood doesn't kill) also non invasive so won't spread to nearby trees.
