Raised bed around existing trees

  • The cambium layer lies just under the bark and is the part of the tree that grows, producing those growth rings. It is protected by the bark, but if the tree is 'ringed', by deer perhaps, or rabbits or rot, it will die.

    If the ring is incomplete, the tree can still survive, even with root damage, like the ancient crab apple in my sheep field, felled by a storm over 20 years ago, and like trees in landslides. Nature is resilient, but there are limits.

    Wow! I didn't expect so much response. Thank you all for taking the time to write. Not sure what we will do yet but thanks for the help. We will probably rather be safe than sorry.
