Can I halve chitted potatoes?
in Fruit & veg
I just started chitting some Charlotte potatoes and they are quite large. I seem to remember that you can cut them in half at planting time, but does this affect the yield?

This is totally off thread, but I can remember my father storing chitted potatoes under the bed to get them shooting.
One night he was woken up by cats caterwauling and threw some of the potatoes at them.
'You must have some bread with it me duck!'
Yes you can as long as there are some 'eyes' on each half. Best to cut them a few days before planting to give the cut faces a chance to callous over.
Re. the potatoes under the bed. Quite the wrong place; they should be in the light.
I wonder if it's an older generation thing. My grandad still puts his on top of the kitchen cupboards, where it is very dark - and dusty.
I'd also like to know if it affects the yield. Never thought of doing this but might give it a go if it provides more potatoes in the end.
I normally cut the large seed potatoes when I buy them, then there is plenty of time to callus over, mine are chitting in the back bedroom out of direct sunlight, as usual looking good now with eyes sprouting.
