I did this when my grandchildren were small. It worked really well. My heavy clay soil isn't good for carrots but they loved the old feed bowl (horse) I used. I grew a relatively small, sweet variety that could be sewn quite densely and thinned them by harvesting baby carrots. The kids loved it, too.
I have a few old, green, Safeway shopping and go crates, - used only once I never did get the hang of shop 'n' go, but the crates have been useful for storage ever since - but not any more as I have moved the storage into another pile, so I have 3 crates which I will use over the next month or so depending on space.
