Kestrel

I have just bought some second early seed potatoes - a shot in the dark as I have only ever grown main crop. The variety I bought is Kestrel - has anyone else grown this variety?

  • Excellent variety which is immune to most pests.  I grow it every year as my soil has keeled slugs which make holes in almost every other variety (and I've tried most available varieties over the decades!)  Great flavour and I find I can leave them in the ground until needed so effectively grow them as a maincrop.  Wouldn't be without them!

Thanks Bob - Sounds like it will be ideal for my ground.  I have made a mistake though as I thought it would be a 'salad' potato.  I have already purchased desiree seed potatoes as my main crop.  We live and learn!

  • You can indeed use them as salad potatoes - just dig them up when the tubers are smaller - they are quite waxy.  For that, just lift them in July/August as needed (assuming they are planted at the usual time for 2nd earlies, in the first half of April.)

Hurrah Bob - even better.  I was planning on planting them at the beginning of April.image
