Grass

I have an area, that has previously had gravel, (with weed protection fabric). I have removed both to which I now have a sandy soil surface which I wish to grass. Would my fellow gardeners recommend that I dig in some quality compost to help germination or will the grass seed grow on this surface?

The ground will very likely be compacted, it could do with digging over. It might not be sandy soil when its dug over, the sand could of been used to level the ground.

Digging in compost will help retain moisture if you soil is sandy.

  • Just checking, but is the sand from what was laid there before, or is it naturally occurring?  If it's naturally part of your soil, then, yes, as Perki says, dig it over, make it a nice fine tilth.  If it's sand that was brought in, make sure it's not that horrible yellowy stuff used for cement. That has salts in it that are toxic to plants
