What a gorgeous view Hosta and the perfect spot for a bench. I wish I had a big old tree like that in my garden, but it's too small a patch. The birch I planted last year is probably going to be the largest thing I can squeeze in. And your lake puts my tiny little pond to shame. Any frogs in it yet? I counted three earlier in the week and I'm so worried in case they are tempted to spawn and then we get a hard frost. Do you know if the spawn would survive? The pond is deep enough not to freeze completely in the middle but they tend to spawn in the shallows.
Oh, but that would be mean! Poor old duckies, not being able to get in for a paddle! I didn't know they ate frogspawn though - you learn something new... I've got tons of newts in my ponds and they are greedy for it. You could always do what my kids did every spring - keep the spawn in a tank until it's froglets and then release them
Everything east frogs pawn unfortunately TTC - including the tadpoles
Survival of the fittest and all that. It's why there's so much of it to start with
I collected some from the top of a rock about 2,000 feet up on a hill last April. I don't think those frogs were very bright because there was a small lochan not that far away. I brought some home in my flask too, but I'm not sure I should have bothered if they were sub standard stock
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Any spawn in my pond is quite vulnerable as the pond's tiny, but that's life. I could put chicken wire over the shallow edge, but it would prevent birds and other creatures using it.
Can't always manipulate nature anyway, even if we like trying

Thanks , I never forget just how lucky I am. Honest.
The trouble I have with spawn is the flippin' ducks eat it. I'm thinking of putting some chicken wire over it to keep them off .

the frogs, very wisely , use one shallow corner. The lake is 0.8 acre in size, so plenty of room for ducky paddling.
Last year the frogs were so keen to breed , a lot of the females drowned due to over amorous males piling on top.

I'll let it build up for a bit then move a bucket up to the pond near the terrace.. The ducks tend not to come up this close to the house too often.
From a simple question about planting snowdrops, I have learned so much! Thank you, all, for this conversation x
We did deviate slightly....

I've just realised I wrote east instead of eats in a previous post. I'm assuming you knew what I meant
