Underwatered or overwatered indoor lemon tree?

I was bought an indoor lemon tree for a present.

The soil was a little moist still so I waited about a week to water it before going away for the weekend. When we got back, the leaves had dropped and lemons had fallen off.

I'm confused as to if it's been under or overwatered. I read that if a tree has been underwatered, when it's watered, it's leaves will drop. However, when I look at the roots, I'm not sure if it's been overwatered

  • I bet it got too hot, suddenly.  Where was it placed?  If the soil is just moist, then that's fine. The leaves, curled like that, look as though they're dried, but even watered carefully, if it's come from a perfect environment to a new situation where the air temperature is too high then it will react as yours has.  It should recover, (even stood outside this mild weather), but be aware of sudden drops in temperature.

  • Hi,

    Thank you for your response!

I've recently moved it closer to the window but before it was on my breakfast bar about 1.5m from the window.

The temp would make sense as my flat is very warm - hopefully now I've moved it to the window, it is actually probably a little cooler.

Do the roots look ok? I'm normally an orchid keeper and they obviously have different roots to other plants so I now have no idea how a normal root is meant to look.
