Lemon tree leaves

My lemon tree lives in the garden during the summer and in the conservatory in the winter.  When I bring it in it starts to lose its leaves, which turn yellow and fall.  I don't know whether this is due to the move or just the time of year, but the problem is it is getting very bare.  New leaves grow, but only on the tips of the branches, which is gradually making the tree bigger and increasingly ugly.  I cannot let this happen any more and have clipped some branches but that stops new leaves there.  Is this normal?  And how can I make it sprout lower down?  In other ways it is healthy, producing flowers and fruit.

Mine lives in a very bright kitchen and is also dropping leaves fast. I moved it away from the patio doors and it was ok for a week but they started dropping again.

I was wondering whether it gets too cold at night then warmed up when the heating comes on.

They get too hot in winter indoors by a radiator. They can stand it quite cold, but not freezing.  If it has dropped a lot of leaves, prune it quite hard. A porch or cold conservatory is probably better than inside a centrally heated house.
