Favourite Hardy Geraniums

Mark56Mark56 Posts: 1,653

So people, what are your top 3? I'm looking to obtain 3-5 to plant in more 'wild' areas of the garden. The majority of spots only get 1-3 hours of morning summer sun. Ideally would like them to flower for at least 4-6 weeks (wargrave pink in a sunnier spot has set precedent).

Second question, does anyone have any experience with 'Dragon's Heart' shade grower or buying from http://www.plantsforshade.co.uk ? I believe someone recommended it on here.

Cheers folks

    Hi Mark

My absolute top favourite is 'Rozanne' for length of flowering and reliability.  In a very shady corner I grow G.phaeum 'Album' which lights it up; and I hate myself for liking G.psilostemon, which is shocking magenta, not a colour I can accommodate in my small garden but great in the right place.  It's a bit big and floppy though.

I guess you'll get loads of different suggestions...  image

No experience of those suppliers, I'm afraid.

Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.

I love G. psilostemon too.  I have a lovely shade lover, G. nodosum Svelte Lilac.  The flowers really stand out in a dark corner.  I bought all of my Geraniums from Plantsmans Preference.  They have a great selection, and are reasonably priced.

Yes, Long Acer Plants for Shade are excellent. Quality plants usually delivered within 48 hours. I emailed a query one evening and received the answer at 7.30 am the next morning. Service!!

Wonderful suggestions everyone image giving me plenty of ideas for the gaps. I was also looking at Tiarella for shade. Ahh yes Lirio, I brought it last year and have it out the front, it flowered it's socks off for ages and picked up where wargrave pink left off. I think this year will be an even better show with the roots more established, seems a slightly slower grower than the previous

Mark -re tiarella.....I find that the flowers flop in deep shade but are upright elsewhere.   I don't know if this is usual.  Can anyone enlighten me?

Ahh okay, thank you for the heads up Joyce - I will re-plan it into a slightly lighter site, I think only 1 of 5 spots will constitute as proper 'shade'  because it's beneath a small beech canopy image meaning I'll have to re-vitalise the soil prior to planting
