salmonberry
Hello,
I am currently cutting down a Salmonberry hedge on the verge by my house (over 20 metres of it). It is very invasive up here and has been invading the ditch and my garden. It will regrow from the roots in spring so can anyone reccommend what kind of weedkiller would knock it on the head. I don't mind if it is one where you can't grow stuff for a few months after using it, but I will eventually want to grow a hawthorn hedge there. Thanks in advance.

I'm in the UK, I live in a very exposed area where Salmonberry is one of the few shrubs that grows well, hence why it is planted. Unfortunately it grows too well and soon becomes invasive. So any advice would be well received
Lindsey, do you live in Caithness or Orkney? If so, the Orkney Woodland Trust may be able to advise you on eradicating it.
Salmonberry is Rubus spectabilis.
Any translocatable weedkiller should deal with it. eventually.
I would treat it as bramble/blackberry and spray several times with a brushwood killer. Start when it has young leaves in the spring.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
Many thanks, I'll look into that and start in the spring. I was hoping to knock it on the head pretty quickly but it sounds like it could be a long job. I'll contact the woodland trust too
Thanks again.
knock it back to the floor now, then spray with a weed killer in spring once its got a bit of growth (5-6 inches), repeat through out the year and it should be gone by autumn.
alternatively, chop it back and get someone with a strong back to dig it out
