Pruning a honeysuckle

Hi everybody,

I have an overgrown honeysuckle as you can see in the images. I am looking for advice of how to prune this. Ideally I would like to keep as much of the climber, however as it is top heavy it might need to be culled!

Thank you in advance!

Hi LLM - they're pretty robust so you can usually hack back hard without any issue - in fact, it often benefits them. You could probably wait a month or two, even though most of us have had a mild winter. That way, the weather should be relatively decent  and new growth won't be affected by severe weather in any way. A tidy up round the base and a general feed, water and mulch will also give it a good 'new' start.

Is that an evergreen one though? I've never had one of those, but I think they're fine too. Someone else will know for sure image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • I had the same question about my evergreen late last year! Link below. I plan to commence the hacking late Feb
