hi. I have moved to a new house with an established magnolia tree. I don't know which variety though. It overhangs our neighbours garden I need advice on how toprune it and also how to care for it

Generally magnolia do not need pruning. Only remove a branch if it is in the way. Just because it overhangs next door does not mean that you have to cut it back. Let them enjoy the flowers too. When it flowers take a photo and post it, someone may be able to identify it. Give it a feed in Spring with something like blood fish and bone, and then mulch it with bark chippings or compost.

Magnolias don't like pruning. They retaliate by growing unproductive (non-flowering) water shoots.
