rats in the compost bin

We have a rat in our compost bin.    Should we be trying to get rid of him, or should we just leave him there for the winter?    Will his presence be detrimental to the compost we eventually hope to get out of this bin?    We are still adding to this bin, and wouldn't normally be emptying it until the autumn 2017.    We have had a series of three bins in this position for seven years and this is our first live occupant, that we know about.

Any advice would be welcomed.

Get rid of him - turn the compost and dampen it - rats like dry homes - give the side of the bin a wallop with a spade every time you walk past or add something - they like being quiet and peaceful.  Don't put any potato peelings etc in there for the time being - they're like caviar to rats.

Rats are not solitary creatures, so if they're not making a nest in your bin, then they're nearby.
    Dove's advice is (as always ;) spot-on

And although I said 'him' it may very likely be a 'her' and probably pregnant!!!

  • Don't forget, rat urine can  spread Weil's disease, and though the risk may be small, you would be wise not to handle contaminated compost without gloves, it's not something anyone would want to get!
