They look stunning Andy! We just moved to a smaller house and garden and now has im wishing we had a bigger garden to accommodate all the fantastic plants I keep seeing posted on the forum.?

Life's tragedy is that we get old too soon and wise too late.

  • It might be me being a gardening muppet but I can't seem to keep the red ones through a winter. The only red that has come through a second winter for me is Red Army.

The yellows and oranges never fail but I'm wary about acquiring new reds now. Indianersommer is a favourite as is Sahin's. Amber was a good buy last year from special perennials, I thought it might get eaten where I planted it, being small but it did very well and has new growth.

Moerheim Beauty is the best red helenium I have seen it turn copper orange with age, mine out performed sahin - walruat last year,  but it would require staking like most heleniums in exposed sites. Helenium short and sassy is a short variety.

Helenium seeds as far as I am aware are not true to seed, they are just hybrids. If you want a red / orange get a named variety.

  • I love Moerheim Beauty too, but find you have to really watch for slugs in spring when it starts into growth. It's  not so vuolnerable once the leaves have had time to harden off.

Two good yellows are Eldorado, which seems to flower for ages, and Double Trouble, both strong growers.

AYM - Peter Nyssen (one of the good guys!) has a reasonable range in 9cm pots,  and you could get 9 plants in a range of colours for just over £15, though one or two varieties are a bit more expensive. (Sold in threes)

I know slugs are a nightmare, I buy some wool pellets and spread them around the plant, keeps them large at bay until they get big enough. Wind did more damage to mine last year.

I note that many of you have problems with slugs, oddly enough they leave the Heleniums well alone in my garden.  There must be far tastier snacks available!  I couldn't upload these yesterday since I was on my phone.  This lot started off as one 2l pot around 4 years ago.  It's H. Moerheim Beauty and I've found it likes plenty of moisture and needs staking or support from surrounding plants.

I'd forgotten about Moerheim Beauty, it's a fab plant. I always think of mine as being orange but it is quite red, or maybe starts off red...
