Planting out

I have a smallish hazel contorta which has been in a pot for the last 3 years and I am thinking of planting it out into my garden.  How much space will it need and when would be the best time to plant out?

you can plant it out now, loosen up the root a bit if it's pot-bound

They're just twisty versions of the native hazel which can get quite big. I've seen the contorted ones 10 or 12 foot up and across, but you can prune them
