Samphire

I'm thinking of trying to grow samphire (from seed) in a container. Has anyone tried it? Is it difficult? Is it worth it? Does it taste nice?

    It tastes lovely when young and fresh but easily gets a woody bit down the middle which I find unpleasant.   I believe it grows naturally in salt estuaries and dunes.

    There are two types - Rock and Marsh samphire - which one are you thinking of growing?


    Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

    I tried doing it as all instructions were provided with the seed. It never germinated. image

    Shame because I love samphire and we are so far from the sea.

    It says Crithmum maritimum in the seed catalogue, I think that's rock samphire.

    Aha! I didn't realise you could grow either rock or marsh samphire. Is there a big difference in taste?

    Fidgetbones, was yours rock or marsh?

    Marsh samphire. I had a huge polystyrene fish box filled with seived veg garden soil.  It has to be watered with salt water and I didn't want it contaminating the main veg patch. I think the seed came from d t Brown.
