Hayter Lawn Mowers

I have a 6 year old Hayter R48 Mower and whilst the engine is alright the deck is badly rusted and corroded. Customer services at Hayter could not have been less helpful and what used to be an iconic British brand is now very much a second rate product.

I just wondered if anyone else has had similar problems and also if any member could recommend a similar mower that has'nt rusted.

  • I haven't any experience of Hayter mowers but any steel deck mower will rust in time particularly if it isn't cleaned off underneath.  The paint finish can wear away fairly quickly on the underside of the deck and then wet grass clippings will stick to it, if left then rust will inevitably occur.

I recommend an aluminium or galvanised steel deck if you want your mower to last.

Glad to hear the engine is still good after six years.  presume B+S.  I would defend Hayter...I've had a R54S for a number of years and it's faultless, fast, reliable and easy.  But yes the deck needs maintenance....and personally i'm going with an end-of-season clean followed by a layer of hammerite....i believe the hammerite can eat a little surface rust whilst then also providing a further protective layer for next year.  not sure if i'll do this every one or two years.

As a retired lawn mower dealer and authorised Hayter service agent I used to see this problem on a regular basis with all makes and types of mower with steel decks, the fault is not with the machine but lack of maintenance and cleaning

Colin, i would be interested to hear whether you think Hammerite is satisfactory or is there a better/correct protection?

    Hello

Hammerite is good so long as the deck is thoroughly clean and dry before application as with any protection used. Also waxoil works very well, either will need to be reapplied every year as abrasives picked up by the blade will damage the coating used.

    Hope this is useful.

  • Did you know you can dilute hammerite with ordinary paint thinners....can be applied in thin layers.....not cheap.....dearly old mowers don't need a lot of work......I,am a ardent collector of hayter and pick up a lot of spare bits......obtained most spare parts list and some manuels ...ring 07967240839 for details
