What's that on my basil
Hi,
I'm new here and I grow herbs indoors in The Netherlands. Something stared growing on the stem of my basil plants (hydroponics). I have lice on pretty much every plant but the basil plants. Under a microscope (100x) the material seems plant-like to me.
Does anybody know what this is?

ps. the material is amber colored and round. It is stuck to the stem and it can be removed with a finger nail. It appears only on the lower part of the plant (until first node).
Thanks pancyface but I'm not really sure. Especially because the article doesn't mention an exact pest or disease. I made 60x picture with my phone:
As pansyface's link suggests, those look like scale insects to me.
Thanks Bob. I had another look at scales and can see the similarities. I took another look at the plants and am confident that the 'brown bumps' don't move at all and actually seem to 'sprout' from the stem.
Possibly the beginning of root growth? Cut off a stem with the brown area on it and place it in. Glass jar of water on a shady windowsill and watch to see if roots grow as with a cutting.

They look like scale insects to me too

Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.
At that magnification they look like scale insects ... but that is a pretty huge magnification ...
as I said - try making cuttings and see if they grow https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/edible/herbs/basil/propagating-basil.htm

Thank you all for your replies. I made a cutting from the 'infected' stem and will see what happens. Cheers!
I got lost in translation a bit with the term 'scale insects'. It translates strangely into Dutch but I get the idea now.
I will keep you informed in the weeks to come.

The 'sprouts' turned out to be roots forming and not scale insects! Thanks all for your help.
Thought so!
Now you can grow on lots of basil plants for the coming summer.
Thanks for letting us know.
