New Year Honours
It's always struck me as ridiculous when competitors still actively involved in sport i.e. doing their normal job, but doing it well, are included in this.
Don't get me wrong, I think people like Andy Murray and many other sports people are brilliant at what they do, but shouldn't recognition come once their sporting career is over?
I think the problem started when England cricket won the Ashes in Australia, for the first time in about a million years, and the entire squad got 'gongs'. They were then whitewashed in the next series, but they didn't hand them back
Using Andy Murray as an example, he's now Sir Andy so what happens if he wins all 4 Grand Slam tournaments in a season? Is he going to replace Charles as next in line to the throne??

I'm a fan of Andy but disapprove of the Honours system as it stands.
All mention of "Empire" is ridiculous in this day and age. . . some have turned down an Honour because of this.
Better to reward someone at the end of their career when it can be shown that an Honour is really deserved.
Andy received is knihood not just for is sporting achievements but also is charity work this is just a few

Obviously touched a nerve somewhere with aym280 who has taken things totally off-topic. My only point is about people being given this type of award part way through their career. The end result often being an upgrade of the award later in life.
We'll never have a true meritocracy as money always has more power than ability has.
