Spring bulbs blooming already

Hello everyone.

I planted a lot of Daffs and Tulip bulbs at the end of October and due to the unseasonal weather they are now starting to bloom already. I wanted them for next spring not now!

Do you think they will flower again next spring or am I out of luck and will have to plant more (end of Jan?)

I think they will flower now and then the bulbs will have to build up for next year.

If by 'next spring' you mean March / April 2017 then the answer is a definite NO.  They won't flower again for another year.

  • Darn it. I will plant more next year.

  • The good news is they will 'settle down' now they are planted and almost certainly bloom at the 'normal' time in spring 2018.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Isn't it a bit late to be planting bulbs to flower in spring 2017?

    Hi Ash Bennette.

Flowering time will depend on variety. There are 26 species of bulb and 26000 varieties which flower from autumn to early May but most from Christmas to Easter. Generally speaking the smaller bulbs flower earlier. You may have planted "Rijnveld's" Early Sensation which flowers at Christmas.

Sometimes a spell cold weather followed by a warm spell may induce flowering. Bulbs will "right" themselves after the first season following planting. Interestingly, if a bulb is planted sideways or even upside down they will right themselves in time.

I would try a number of varieties that flower over an extended period for a good display.

    Hope this helps. Good luck.
