Nerines

I have just received some nerine bulbs and want to plant them in pots. The varieties are bowdenii.alba. isabel. Stefano. Are they all hardy and can I plant them now or wait till spring.

I'd be grateful for some advice.

I also have just brought some from Homebase (apparently they have changed hands and everything is now cheaper!). Reduced bulbs from £3.00 to 50p here. Mine say plant March - May for flowering September - October image

All plants are better in soil than in plastic bags or a box in a shed, there is no time in a plants natural life when it sits exposed on the surface of the ground.

If they're going into pots I'd put them in pots. I'd protect them from extremes of cold and wet.

    In the sticks near Peterborough
  • Maybe I'll plant them. They are  Bowdenii variety which is the hardy ones. So rather than have them knocking around the shed they'll be better off in a pot.

The reason they are saying don't plant till that date is to minimise the duration they could be sat dormant in wet, cold poorly drained positions. They like well drained, fertile soil in a sunny position. They also advise lifting them for this exact reason through Winter. In your case just bring the pots undercover if that's possible.
