days getting longer
Now that we've had the shortest day, now they're getting longer, but only by a second each day.

A bit more than a second a day. On that basis we'd only get about 3 minutes per day extra daylight by mid summer.
The earliest sunset was on December 12, so the evenings have been getting lighter for over a week! The latest sunrise is December 30th.
Winter solstice today
Good the days are getting lighter, spotted some daffs today up above the ground
I hope fellow SAD sufferers , esp Punkdoc feel the benefit soon.
Meant to say, it's about a minute or two.
It gets more as the weeks go.

Well there's an optimist.
Yes it is in a way reassuring. It will take its time but once we are well into January you do begin to see the improvements.
'You must have some bread with it me duck!'
It also means that we're only 6 months away from the days getting shorter again
Happy Christmas
I had almost forgotten about it....
Thanks for reminding!! Time for me to plant gladiolus. Waited for this for such a long time.....

At the moment there's only a few extra seconds of daylight per day. Little by little it increases and by the time we reach the spring equinox we're getting about 4 minutes of extra daylight per day (in London).
Then it starts to slow again until we reach midsummer on 21 June.
We're also closest to the sun this time of year, not in the summer
Then it all goes into reverse
