Hi GWRS, I planted them with the tips showing. I've just checked the label that came with the onions and that is how it said to plant them. However if I do plant them again I'm going to completely bury them as I have a vague idea it is the freezing that affects them.
Hi Fire, I'm still sad about the bench too, I don't like to think people exist that are that mean and weak but there you go...
I didn't realise until I was looking at pictures this week of last year (to see how much later Spring is) that I have had the allotment for a full year.
I only had my other allotment maybe 4 months and had theft, flytipping by people on and off the allotment and some other odd behaviour. Had no weirdness at this plot and have left tools up there and all sorts.
Planted first and second earlies this morning, Foremost and Kestrel. These potatoes have a weight on their shoulders because if they aren't amazing I will use their space for something more fun and cost effective. Also planted two lots of onions, Hercules and Centurian. Also have a pack of Sturion (?) but will leave them for a few weeks to see if this warm patch of weather will degrade more clay as I don't think I can plant into it yet.
Planted up the summer rasp enclave with some last minute purchases, Valentina, Glen Fyne, Malling Juno and a tayberry and two Glen Coe I already had. Not sure how visible that is, on the other side of the fence on the left I have a Black Jewel and a Glen Lyon (? forgotten) to plant but because they were tiny from a diy store thought I would grow on in pots first. This pic also shows the dregs of my winter onions in the centre bed. These are Senshyu Yellow, they are mushy but still there so I'll see what happens, the other types in the beds either side virtually disappeared.
Planted a pinkcurrant and a gooseberry in temporary spaces for now while I do some admin in the area. Also planted up 3 Polka canes that were part of a multipack with some of the summer rasps above. I hope they're Polka anyway, they weren't labelled.
Might try sowing beetroot on May bank holiday weekend, need to sort out an area for them first.
Hello , sorry about your onions ,if they are mushy don’t think they will be any good , sometimes these thing happen Goosebury bushes are really easy to get extra bushes from pegging a branch into the ground and waiting for roots to appear , I have bark chippings around mine to keep the weeds down Spring and decent weather very late this year Just feed all my fruit bushes with blood fish & bone and other beds that I have Weeded and dug over , chicken pallets Had a small patch of clay on plot but kept digging in manure and spent compost including used grow bags , Pleased to say no longer a problem we try and grow a couple of different crops each year , still thinking about this years will let you know Best wishes
Flying visit today to feed the birds and water the fruit I still have in pots and also to photograph my Autumn rhubarb which has passed away. It seems to have disintegrated so have reported it to the supplier.
The free mixed daffs I planted have produced several of these: I think they are lovely and will dig them up and put them in the garden instead. They remind me of a pudding or an ice cream, but I can't think what🤔
My crab apple Butterball is looking lovely too: I bought it over winter and as an experiment to see how little staking is required, used two diagonal bamboo canes for a 4 or 5' tree. All looks well and I'm excited to see how it gets on, looking extremely bonny at the mo and slightly ahead of my other young apples blossom wise although I bought it to be a pollinator.
Hello glad all’s going well , Crab apple looks rather good I have some Daffs at allotment which I just leave in , Daffs at home have been rather good this year nearly all over now Hoping to get Allotment tomorrow So much rain ☔️ just lately Have you got much planted ?
I've planted early and first early pots and two lots of onions, have a third lot to go in next weekend. Still have some beetroot to sow but I haven't prepped a bed yet. I have 3 lots of garlic in also that is taking up a bit of space, plus all the fruit.🙂
I'm running out of space as I need a certain amount of 'admin' space to dig one last trench to help prevent water logging, an area to lay out and dry the clay over summer, space to keep the 'organic matter' I've collected to back fill the trench and also enough space to build my greenhouse without getting too cross and breaking things😕
I've still got a few daffs left to go in the garden, am moving all my spares, mixes and not too specials to the plot as I'm running out of daff space in the garden. A nice problem to have😉
Been meddling at the lotment this weekend. Not sure if this looks like much to the trained eye, but basically I've started prepping/levelling the topsoil I dumped on the flood zone which is stage 1 of the forthcoming Operation Greenhouse.
Next weekend I'll have another go at any remaining lumps and test with the sprit level. For saying there are several trenches underneath filled with various debris it all seems sturdy underfoot and I haven't sank through anywhere.
Also this weekend I planted the last onion sets and sowed the beetroot seeds. I couldn't plant either of them where I originally planned as the ground had set like concrete. Both areas were where I had laid clay out to dry last year and the clay content is clearly still too high. I made space around the rhubarb, the 'soil' is mostly made up of woodchip and manure but at least is movable.
I got a refund for rhubarb Livingstone which disintegrated over winter, have planted beetroot in its place for now but at the end of the year will probably move one of the two split pieces of the original rhubarb into its space as they are currently planted right next to each other counter productively.
All the new fruit is looking fine, including the stuff still in pots surprisingly. All Gold rasp finally started shooting. The canes I got recently (summer and autumn) were much quicker to start by comparison.
Moved some random mixed daffs out the garden and planted where you can see them behind the crab apple in the above pic. I hate planting bulbs in the green, it's a messy business but it has freed space in the garden for some lawn and other plants.🙂
