Lawn Dressing at this time of the year?
I applied moss killer and aerated my lawn a couple of months ago but for one reason or another I was unable to top-dress it.
I do understand that this job should ideally have been done in the autumn but with the very mild weather we are having in East Devon I was wondering if it’s okay to do it now, in December? As my soil is moderately heavy clay, should I worry about walking on it at this time of the year?
As it’s still growing, should I cut the grass before applying the top dressing?

Its ideal to keep off a wet / frozen lawn in winter, I would personally leave it to March, you can do it now if you really want to though if the condition are ok. My lawn has heavy soil / clay I spike the lawn first with a fork and then top dress, if your lawn doesn't drain well mix two parts sharp sand to one part top soil, I found bags of top dressing very expensive for what it is.
You can cut the grass but not to short, you dont want the top dressing to smother the grass or damage it by cutting to short at this time of year. dont cut if frost is forecast
Perki,
Thanks for your reply.
I have bags of sharp sand and topsoil waiting to be mixed and I may give the lawn one last cut with the blades set high.
