it is an evergreen, you're right.
It doesn't look very lively in the green bits. If it were mine I'd cut it well back and speak to it nicely. But that's just based on my approach, others may have better suggestions.
In the sticks near Peterborough
I've found it can be susceptible to cold winds - could it be in the path of a chilly draught whipping around a corner? Even in London the wind can be quite nippy.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
The good news is that the top of the plant is nice and green. However, watch it all, because armandii, especially recently planted, can suddenly decide that conditions don't suit it after all and turn up its toes. It does prefer a sheltered site and the recent cold may just have got to parts of it. The notching and minor physical damage is irrelevant, probably snail or similar and can be disregarded.

Thanks for this. I would say it's a sheltered spot... I will keep an eye on it. give it some water too..
I've had 2 Clematis armandii die on me in succession, one after a nice show of flowers. Concluded this kind of Clematis does not like me or my garden. Will not persist and have replaced with a nice Trachelospermum jasminoides - Confederate jasmine.
I've already got a jasmine one side of my rose arch.. guess I could get another one for the rear trellis if the armandi dies
