Conifer Clippings

Hi,

I have recently had 3 big conifer stumps ground down to chippings. The company has left the chippings mixed in with the soil. I want to replant in the area next summer. Do I need to remove the chippings or can I just leave. There seems to be mixed advice out there!

Thanks in advance!

  • I'd leave the chippings to rot down where they are.  They might deplete the nitrogen in the soil a bit as they rot down, but I presume you're going to add lots of well rotted organic manure and some Fish Blood and Bone to that bed anyway, as the conifers will have seriously depleted the nutrition in the soil over the years.
