Anybody else got a problem with squirrels on the bird feeders?

I think I've cracked it !!

i put this up a week ago and the squirrels haven't managed to find a way around it as yet.

one upside down wire hanging basket secured on the feeder with wire, easy why didn't I think of this before?

Hope this is helpful to any one who is plagued with squirrels.

    Squirrel in Chrissy's garden speaking:

    - Oh, rats!

  • Don't want to pour any cold water on your triumph Chrissy image, but wait until the summer when the new young squirrels are out and about ... they'll slip through those holes as if they were greased with butter image   ... but for the time being it'll probably keep the adults at bay.

  • Thanks Dove, if that's the case in the summer I can always put some small holed net on top of the basket.

Congratulations on your temporary solution!  They're clever little b****** and I'll be amazed if they don't find a way past that quite soon.  It may simply be that they have an easier supply to raid elsewhere at the moment.

My squirrels can squeeze through the small holes in the squirrel bird feeder.....they soon find a way.

  • Another temporary solution is to grease the pole with vegetable oil. It's great fun watching the reaction as a squirrel leaps onto the pole and slides down image  However it needs renewing every day.

  • I've tried this Dove and yes  it was funny but I felt sorry for the squirrel putting in all that effort for my enjoyment , so we will see if the basket works even for a short time.

Im already worrying about what if the squirrel gets stuck trying to get through the wire. image

Seems like the shape is a good idea, it's just the holes that they might conquer / get caught in. Maybe you could fashion somethjng more solid? I bought one of these for my brother which I think was quite effective, but I don't know if the angle of the sides is pivotal: http://shopping.rspb.org.uk/squirrel-guard-pole-mounted-cone.html

Yes, definitely not a long term solution, but it did provide a morning of amusement on a very tedious office day when the IT systems and phones were all down image

Don't worry about squirrells they will find food somewhere else, I axle greased our feeder pole a year or two back the squirrells haven't returned, previous to that I tried chilli pepper but did feel sorry for the squirrells tamping their feed to get rid of it, and didn't use it twice.
