As well as frogs and toad, hedgehogs also eat slugs. Do consider them if you use slug pellets as they will surely either die or suffer terribly from any slug deterrent.
We use gravel on our paths and also around some of our precious plants, and also spread a thick layer of wood chips on our flower beds - both of which act as a deterrent to slugs.

We have the big orange slugs ArionRufus. I've never seen them on our Hostas. It's snails ghat seem to do their best to destroy our Hostas.
