  • So the slight movement in the valve is OK then ?. what happens when the engine is running. Does this piece move out the way because if not it will constantly be nudging the exhaust tappet.

The decompressor lobe should be spring loaded to hold it in place while starting and will rotate out of the way once the engine gets going through the wonders of centripetal force. You can find YouTube videos showing you how it works.

  • That's great thanks all. I think I may still have a problem though. Now I have solved the issue with the decompression item. I'm still set with a small issue. originally the middle ring went which was replaced. all adjustments done including reseating valves etc. however on rebuild I pulled the engine over but there was a stiff spot when pulling almost like kickback though the plug was disconnected. if I remove the plug she pulls over like a dream no probs so clearly a compression issue ( I think). any ideas guys please.

I think you need to be very accurate when setting valve clearances or the decompressor doesn't work. If in doubt aim for the smallest clearance of the acceptable range e.g. if it is 4 to 6 thou aim for 4 thou.

  • Is there a way of doing that without buying new valves. I have reseated the valves but to be honest I was at the upper level of gap tolerances for my machine. so do I try and seat them further or is there another way please.
