Strange red/pink growth on Dahlias

image  This is Dahlia Moonfire that has been frosted and now dug up to store overwinter.  Noticed this pinkish, growth that I touched and was surprised to find it was hard, sort of like cactussy!   Anyone seen similar?  Is it a gall of some sort maybe?

  • You could be right - it could be leafy gall rather than crown gall I would think.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Hi I know this is a super old post but was it ever solved??? I have the EXACT same thing on my dahlias, very pink, have not sprouted into leaves or stems though. Very concerned it's crown gall, but I can't find any other photos on the internet of it being pink like this.

This is a super old answer to say that I just threw it in the green bin and bought another!

I think binning it is the advice (not on your compost bin)

Hmm, wonder if commercial hot composting kills this?  I'm afraid I always assume it does (green bin in our area).   Perhaps it should have gone in land fill (black bin in our area).
