Agree with the balanced and moderation approach. I always think that 'home-cooked' food, particularly with plenty of veg is a healthy regime.
I think you have to be a bit organised to home cook, and shift work is a nightmare for sticking to meal times and finding something to eat at all hours! I find the typical 'breakfast' foods are great to eat anytime of day and when you are tired and busy it is not always attractive or practical to be chopping veg or tucking into a salad!
Calories in minus calories burnt equals potential weight gain but healthy eating is more than just this - I always think that if I have eaten loads of fruit and veg in the day then I can 'justify' a cake or chocolate - and if I have eaten a few foods with high fat then I need to grab an apple etc.
