i like the rhs encyclopaedia of plants. And the which guide to Successful Pruning by Peter McHoy. I always refer to that one before taking the secateurs to a new plant.

I've had various favourites over the years......it depends what you want really.  This is my current favourite, Adrian Thomas's Gardening for Wildlife  because that's what I am into now:

The Hillier is more of a 'Bible' if you are a plant person.  I find the RHS encyclopedia is good for looking things up but the intenet is better.  Any of the Geoff Hamilton books are good and I frequently come back to them.

Based in Sussex, I garden to encourage as many birds to my garden as possible.
  • Hi Dave

you cant go far wrong with the RHS Encyclopedia of Gardening, £30 new from the RHS or from £10ish second hand on amazon.

As B3 says the Readers Digest , The Gardening Year, Month by Month in the Garden, out of print now but available on E-Bay.

For plants, the RHS Encyclopedia of Plants, £60 new from the RHS, 4th Ed, or £6.63 for my ed from 1996.

If you get interested in botany - The Principles of Horticulture, up to ed 6 and available from amazon/e-bay.

I'm another who likes the RHS Encyclopedia of Gardening. For veg growing and cooking I like an old book Food from Your Garden by the Reader's Digest.
