Frozen tree fern

Does anyone know how long after a tree fern has been exposed to cold weather (-6 for a week) they know whether it's survived or not?

We were hit with some pretty cold weather a couple of weeks ago and the tree fern was left uncovered the first morning until I managed to get out there and wrap it all up in straw and fleece. I've took it off now because weather turned mild again but I'm worried the top already feels a bit mushy.

Does it happen that quickly? Or is there still a chance that I has survived? I'm putting it in the garage over winter so it doesn't freeze but the damage might already have happened.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

  • I doubt it suffered too much. What will do it harm is getting soaked and then freezing. That'll finish most of us off, tree ferns included. I'd bring it in, if that's what you do normally and dry it off then protect it.

OK, phew, that's a relief. I've already took it inside so hopefully no damage was done.
