Iris plants- do they die back in winter

Planted some iris plants over the summer which flowered and the foliage has stayed green  up until now. it's started dying back and not sure if they're meant to or whether the ground they're in is too wet for them? any ideas?

  • Which kind of iris are we talking about?  The answer could be different depending on variety.

Yes they do die back and also they thrive in damp conditions.
