  • Looks like textbook adult vine weevil damage, Charlotte.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • I agree - adult vine weevils. Use nematodes next year as soon as the soil is warm enough. It worked here image

  • Definitely vine weevil, as said.  Some advice - is it in a pot? If so, check the leaf litter around the base of the plant for adults (a bit late in the season now, but some may be hanging on) and also, if the pot has a turned over lip, check under that. Looks like a good infestation, so next spring will see the emergence of adults from over wintering grubs. Nematodes will work on the grubs, but they'll not be effective until it's warm enough, so night time patrols as soon as the weather warms up a bit in late Feb might prove successful when hunting the adults. They take some squishing!

  • Thanks everyone for your insight and useful remedies. I really appreciate it as I'm sure this plant will thrive when I get rid of the pesky blighters. x
